Since the acquisition of Plymouth-based Manuplas by Advanced Insulation in April 2014, the company has seen significant growth in demand for its products and as a result has made the decision to purchase a neighbouring facility on the Estover Road site.
The new facility will service the demand for new subsea buoyancy products as well as creating more space for marine products manufacture including buoys and modular bow fender systems for offshore wind farm service vessels.
Commenting for Manuplas, General Manager Stephen Ward says: “The growth of the renewables industry, particularly offshore wind farms, has driven us to spend many years researching and developing leading concepts for modular fendering systems that are mounted on wind farm support and crew vessels. With these new solutions already proving popular, and demand for our existing portfolio strong, extra space and additional manufacturing facilities will help to futureproof the company.”
The Manuplas portfolio now includes a range of sub-surface buoyancy and subsea protection products such as pipe laying floats, umbilical floats, installation buoys, modular subsea mooring buoys, piggyback saddles, subsea cable protection systems and ROV buoyancy. Additionally, the company is also readying itself for the launch of a range of Distributed Buoyancy Modules incorporating proprietary engineered clamp technology for the SURF (Subsea Umbilical Riser Flowline) market. At 50,000 square feet, the purchase of the new unit on Estover Road will more than double the manufacturing and office space of the existing Manuplas facility, with 80% of the additional floor space being earmarked for the manufacture of future designed and developed high-performance products.
As Stephen goes on to say, the Manuplas name has a long association with the design, manufacture and supply of marine products to ports, harbours, navies, boat builders and vessel operators around the world and, through substantial investment in research and development, products now include market-leading solutions for the rapidly growing offshore industry where lightweight buoyancy materials are required for use in water depths beyond 3000msw.
On-going research and development projects have seen the company develop and manufacture high-performance products incorporating physically cross-linked polyethylene foams which, to increase abrasion and tear resistance, are sprayed in a unique protective marine-grade polyurethane coating that allows for the incorporation of a nylon or Kevlar reinforcement. Additionally, the company’s new modular, foamless polyurethane fender solutions have the ability to deliver excellent energy absorption properties thanks to the unique design of the internal structure.

Gloucester-based Advanced Insulation has, for a second time in six months, been placed on a Sunday Times Track listing, this time ranked 58th on the sixth annual Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200.
Commenting for Advanced Insulation – a leading manufacturer of passive fire protection systems and insulation materials for the upstream oil and gas industry – Group Marketing Manager Matt Collins says: “This is our second appearance on a Sunday Times Track league table in 2015 and we are delighted to be joined on this listing by 12 other companies from the South West region as well as other oil and gas sector businesses including Mech-Tool Engineering and ICR Integrity.”
Measured over its latest two years of available accounts, Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 listing ranks Britain's mid-market private companies with the fastest-growing international sales and is an expansion of the International Track 100 league table. Advanced Insulation made this latest list with overseas sales more than doubling to £35m in the two years to 2014, boosted by growth in Korea, Angola and Brazil.
Commenting for HSBC, UK head of corporate banking Amanda Murphy says: “The Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 is a great reflection of the value of building connections overseas. The world is getting smaller, and international business relationships are easier to build, providing ambitious businesses with many more opportunities to grow. I'm delighted to see so many great British mid-sized firms making such a strong impression on the world stage."

Q8Oils has announced a reorganisation of its European lubricants manufacturing following the recent completion of a £100 million investment to upgrade its European blending plant in Antwerp. Having doubled capacity at its Antwerp plant, which is now capable of producing 250 million litres of blended product a year, Q8Oils has moved its UK blending operations to Antwerp and is investing in a new purpose-built UK headquarters in Leeds.
Explaining the changes, UK managing director Andy Dixon stresses that this is a positive step for the UK and that Q8Oils is now focusing on expanding its business in the UK market. “This move is part of our plans for a long term commitment to the manufacturing, automotive and energy sectors and the restructuring includes new headquarters in Leeds that opened on 3rd July.”
Andy also confirms that Q8Oils has announced the appointment of new business partners, IBL Bulk Liquids, Reynolds Logistics, Potters Logistics and Clarke Transport, to manage the company’s bulk storage and pack operations in the UK.
All new UK distribution partners are established experts in packaging and distribution; and the Q8 products delivered will be the same as those already sold in the UK, with products being processed in Antwerp and delivered to Q8Oils’ UK partners.
From its operations on the River Hull and in the Port of Hull, IBL Bulk Liquids will provide Q8Oils with services and facilities for the handling and storage of bulk liquids. They are perfectly located to handle product imports from Q8Oils in Europe and its sites offer excellent connections to the UK road and rail networks. IBL Bulk Liquids offer 120 storage tanks, with a total capacity of around 34,500 cubic metres and handling facilities for road tankers and tank containers.
Operating throughout the UK, Reynolds Logistics provides metered deliveries of lubricants and, using the markets’ largest operational fleet of metered tankers and IBC vehicles based in more than six strategic locations, they are well placed to provide Q8Oils with a fast and efficient delivery service.
Potters Logistics maintains a centrally-managed fleet of articulated and rigid vehicles and will provide Q8Oils with a flexible, cost-effective road freight and transport logistics distribution service from its six distribution centres and rail freight terminals.
Finally, family owned and operated Clarke Transport uses state-of-the-art technology, machinery and vehicles to ensure that the Q8Oils service remains ahead of the field. Based on old-fashioned values of safety, excellent customer service, integrity and reliability, Clarke Transport specialises in transporting sensitive goods for some of the world’s leading manufacturers of chemicals.
Andy Dixon states: “The important message to Q8Oils’ loyal UK customers is longevity and optimisation and, through better utilisation of European assets, the UK business is already creating long-term commitments, including new area sales manager appointments and recently signed major contracts, all of which demonstrate an on-going commitment to the UK.”
Some of the rationalising of the UK business has been influenced through experience gained during a similarly successful merger recently completed by Q8Oils in Scandinavia. Two years ago the expanded Antwerp plant began supplying product to the region and the service proved so successful that Q8Oils was able to merge operations in Denmark and Sweden and supply the entire Scandinavian customer base from there. The move means that Q8Oils is now the largest oil company in Scandinavia and the experienced gained has provided a successful model that has been a useful guide to the UK team.

The Vavea Aeropulse is an autonomous industrial cleansing and deodorising system designed for the diffusion of disinfectants and fragrances and to meet potential growth in numerous markets. It has been developed to offer a combination of reliability, cost efficiency and low maintenance functionality and, for this reason, the company has partnered with the Gast Group for the supply of the essential pump needed to generate a constant flow of air to achieve the best possible atomisation of liquids.
As Vavea co-founders Dominique Balencie and Bruno Gual explain, the reason for entrusting the Gast Group with such an integral part of the product’s makeup is that Gast pumps are already used in similar applications: “Vavea was looking for a reliable pump unit that was light and rugged. We wanted to offer a combination of high quality equipment with minimum maintenance and, after tests of several models, the Gast DOA diaphragm pump gave us the best result.”
Vavea’s Aeropulse system works by diffusing liquid disinfectants, insecticides, odour neutralisers or fragrances into a dry fog, a process that allows the maximum surface area of a premises to be treated with a liquid product, without resulting in dampness or stains. The integrated Gast DOA diaphragm pump is vital in providing the Aeropulse system with maximum air pressure, whilst remaining a sustainable and cost-effective air pump.
Because the Gast DOA diaphragm pump has a limited pulsing effect but still achieves 3 bar pressure, it is able to develop a constant flow of air to create the best atomisation of a liquid. Its continuous duty cycle capability also enables it to run the system for several hours when used in large premises.
The inclusion of the Gast DOA diaphragm pump within the Aeropulse atomiser also ensures that the Vavea system has the same impressive reputation for reliability. The system is now effectively atomising liquids to deodorise and disinfect premises in a variety of sectors including medical, veterinary, nursing, education, gymnasiums, food & beverage, retail, industrial, leisure and commercial environments; and is available throughout Europe.
The Gast DOA oil-less diaphragm compressors and vacuum pumps are an ideal source of quiet vacuum or pressure and are available in standard, twin, and miniature styles. Air flow capabilities for portfolio range from 0.65 lpm to 108 lpm, vacuum as low as 31 mbar abs and pressure to 4.2 bar. Electric motors are available in dual frequency, shaded pole, permanent split capacitor (psc) and AC multi voltages for worldwide applications. Additionally, 4 to 24 volt DC options are also available for the miniature styles, with horsepower outputs ranging from 1/16 to 1/2 HP (0.05 to 0.37 kW) on the standard size models.
Gast Group products are well known for their reliability and are used for a variety of industrial, laboratory and manufacturing applications where the dependency and accuracy of these components are of primary concern. Examples include, industrial mixing equipment and pump drive; in-vitro diagnostic and laboratory automation equipment; gas generators and cable pressurisation.
Further information on the Gast DOA oil-less diaphragm compressors and vacuum pumps is available from www.gastmfg.com, by emailing gastgroup.uk@idexcorp.com or calling +44 (0) 1527 504040.
Gloucestershire-based Advanced Insulation, a leading manufacturer of technical coatings, specialised passive fire protection systems and thermal insulation materials for the upstream oil and gas industry, has opened a major expansion to its Gloucester manufacturing facility on the Quedgeley West Business Park.
Following significant growth in recentyears, the recently refurbished 35,500square feet Unit L building will accommodate several new processes – including the company’s award-winning ContraFlame® MS400 deck protection system – that will contribute to the company’s future development.
A number of panel presses are being installed and commissioned at the new Gloucester facility and will help Advanced Insulation significantly increase the production of ContraFlame MS400 panels to meet the current and expected growth in international demand for this type of system.
Commenting, Advanced Insulation’s Production Manager Chris O’Leary says that the current building, occupied just four years ago, no longer has the capacity to cope with future demand for ContraFlame MS400 and other product lines coming through the order books.
“Additionally, production space within the new building includes an area to accommodate the application processes for Advanced Insulation’s ContraTherm® C25 silicon-based insulation, which has been ordered by a major new client for applications such as pipework, connectors and other oil & gas equipment.” says Chris.
Alterations to Unit L building started at the beginning of 2015, with the ContraFlame MS400 presses being commissioned in early June for panel production to commence in August.
Initially, Unit L will create approximately fifteen new jobs at the Quedgeley site and will also accommodate an office area for Advanced Insulation’s engineering and design department. The additional manufacturing space will also be used to produce other new products as they are introduced, as well as developing new ways to use existing core products.
Panel products such as MS400 are easier to install compared to alternative solutions. Additionally, with no restrictions on material shelf life, handling and storage issues are eliminated and using lightweight materials and products has the potential to save customers substantial amounts of money and weight.
As Chris explains, ContraFlame MS400 is currently one of the oil & gas industry’s optimum insulation materials and has already won a number of awards, including the National Smart Product Award at this year’s EEF/Aldermore Future Manufacturing Awards.

As leading manufacturers of technical and insulation materials for the upstream oil and gas industry – and specialists in the design, engineering and manufacture of polymer solutions for the marine and offshore sectors – Advanced Insulation and its Manuplas business unit have manufactured and supplied a five-piece modular bow fender set to Northern Offshore Services AB (NOS) for its M/V Developer, a next-generation crew vessel developed and based on the company’s extensive experience in the offshore wind market.
The Manuplas name has a long association with the design, manufacture and supply of marine products – such as modular bow fender systems for offshore wind farm service vessels – to ports, harbours, navies, boat builders and vessel operators around the world and, as Manuplas technical sales support manager Andrew Wickham explains, Manuplas developed this custom fender system following more than 10 years’ experience in designing and engineering bow fenders, utilising bespoke materials developed in house specifically for this highly demanding application.
“These fender designs are proving popular based on their ability to generate higher levels of grip while applying less force on the landing piles. The impact pads which take most of the abuse, are independent of the rest of the Bow fender system. This makes them easier and more cost effective to replace as and when required and ultimately minimises any disruption to the vessel’s operation schedule.” Says Andrew.
Other benefits of the fender set include high-impact absorbency with the ability to withstand harsh offshore environments, safe access to turbines, high abrasion resistance and a virtually non-marking external finish.
Commenting for NOS technical manager Markus Olofsson says: “The main reason for contacting Manuplas was to create a partnership that could successfully build custom boat landing fenders. The increased surface area where their solution attaches to the boat landings, coupled with the advanced materials used, increases the wave height that the vessel can accommodate at the boat landing.”
The custom fender developed with Manuplas is a high-performance solution that provides excellent performance at sea when arriving at boat landings in poor weather
Additionally, with the new five-piece modular fender set, NOS can operate in much higher wave heights. On a typical day in the North Sea, NOS’s newer vessels can operate for around 28 days per month.
Summing up Markus says: “We have been working with Manuplas for six years and were among the first to use the custom-built fenders. They are outstanding in service and its new five-piece modular fender set is very high on the list of performance features for NOS’s vessels. It is also much cheaper to replace a fender than to repair a vessel, so the Manuplas solution is also an important component in helping us to succeed in this market.”
Northern Offshore Services’ M/V Developer has now been deployed to UK offshore wind farms for operation.
