Curtiss-Wright Controls Industrial – a member of Curtiss-Wright Corporation and leaders in control devices and systems for industrial and medical vehicles and equipment – has been supplying its Penny + Giles joystick controllers to GRAMMER EiA Electronics (formerly EiA Electronics) for many years, so when a more ruggedised joystick with improved feedback was required for the latest Massey Ferguson MF7600 series of tractors, GRAMMER EiA Electronics had no hesitation in turning to Penny + Giles for the solution.

Explaining the requirements for the new joystick, GRAMMER EiA Electronics’ programme manager Marko Boving says that Massey Ferguson wanted a joystick controller with differentiated outputs on all the axes and an overpress function that would provide the positive feedback that is so important to Massey Ferguson’s customers.

As a leading system integrator GRAMMER EiA Electronics is working with customers around the world to create ergonomic operator working environments for tractors, excavators, wheeled-loaders and fork-lift trucks. The company’s multimedia operator interfaces, similar to BMW’s i-Drive on road cars, are typically operated from its standard arm-rest range using custom joystick and handle solutions.

And this, as Marko Boving explains, is why GRAMMER EiA Electronics works closely with Penny + Giles.

“Penny + Giles already has an excellent range of joysticks, handles and interfaces so we don’t need to develop our own such products. Consequently, we rely on their expertise from initial development right through to production. For this project we were asked to supply an alternative to a current Massey Ferguson joystick, with a specific requirement that it should provide the same feel and functionality. We passed a very detailed product and systems brief to Penny + Giles and they developed a joystick to our specification.” He says.

An important element of the brief was the need for overpress functionality in every axis with improved feel on the shorter stroke, in order to achieve more direct and positive feedback.  Penny + Giles latest ‘ruggedised’ JC8000 joystick controller already had the independent axis functionality built into its design and features a spring on each axis, which helped to achieve the desired forward and right directional operation as well as the operator feel that the customer wanted. The joystick always returns to centre but when it is pushed forward or right it provides a ‘click’ to let the operator know that his instruction has been achieved. The vehicle electronics system from GRAMMER EiA Electronics recognises the overpress decision and translates it into a machine action e.g. return-to-dig or return-to-load.

Within the standard JC8000 design the outputs are configurable to meet the customer’s requirements, making it a very flexible unit that can be programmed beyond the standard ‘square’ outputs. The overpress facility is programmable to allow the JC8000 to deliver more travel in each direction, which in the GRAMMER EiA Electronics version is both right and forward. The joystick provides an analogue output that feeds into a CAN node on the vehicle’s control arm.

The JC8000 is offered exclusively on MF7600 Series vehicles fitted with a front bucket. Standard operation employs switches but most buyers taking the bucket also choose the optional joystick, which is proving so popular with machine operators that it is almost a standard-fit item.

The heavy-duty JC8000 is a relative newcomer to the Penny + Giles joystick controller range, which has been specially engineered with a number of high-strength features. This makes it ideal for applications in physically-demanding working conditions such as skid steer loader controls or where operators traditionally use hydraulic joysticks. The increased strength of the JC8000 has been achieved by increasing the body material around the area supporting the operating lever; increasing the operating lever’s diameter; and changing its pivot geometry. These fundamental changes have enabled the joystick to handle increased torque and improved the lever’s bending and applied loads.

Designed for the most challenging applications, the JC8000 can withstand a 380Nm overload on the X and Y axes and 2000Nm on the vertical. It has also been tested to more than 60 million operations (15 million cycles) under laboratory conditions.

Summing up, Marko Boving says: “Penny + Giles created a very effective solution, developed and delivered a very reliable product, and we were absolutely satisfied with the service they provided throughout.”

In September, natural ventilation, daylighting and cooling specialist Monodraught supplied and installed free of charge a number of its natural ventilation and daylighting systems to ‘The Little Miracles’ Project as part of  BBC’s charity ‘Children in Need’ featured in the BBC One special programme 'DIY SOS: The Big Build. The systems were used as part of a life changing transformation to the centre for disabled children in Peterborough.

‘Little Miracles’ (http://www.littlemiraclespeterborough.org.uk/about.html) is a Peterborough-based, parent-led centre support group and charity for children with additional needs, disabilities and life-limiting conditions. Set up by Michelle King in 2010 after she was refused access on public transport because of her son Oliver’s medical equipment; Little Miracles now helps 700 families and has over 2500 children registered to use the centre. What started out as a coffee morning for mums with similar issues quickly became a registered charity and a lifeline to the many families that use it. A staggering 83% of the families that use Little Miracles live below the poverty line, so all services are free-of-charge and, for many of the children that use the centre, Little Miracles is the only place where they are able to communicate freely, make friends, and most importantly – be themselves.

Built in Peterborough in just ten days in September, the Little Miracles site was erected on a gifted 2½ acre site, which includes an old, run down concrete prefab. While the new site is bigger than the Charity’s previous property, its existing building was not fit for purpose and had the potential to cause significant problems to many of the families who desperately rely on the help given by Little Miracles. There were no disabled toilets, access ramps or changing facilities, and the existing climbing structures were unsafe and condemned. The building contained asbestos, was not secure and had none of the sensory equipment so many of the children depend upon. Monodraught’s contribution was to supply and install three WINDCATCHER® X-Air 140 natural ventilation systems complete with an iNVent® fully-automatic control system, to provide natural ventilation to the Main Hall. In addition, nine 300mm diameter SUNPIPE® natural daylight systems were supplied and installed to serve the main corridor next to the “living wall” and toilet areas.

All of the systems were donated and installed free-of-charge by Monodraught. A team of four installers and a project manager completed the installation in just two days, amongst all the other activities involved in completing a brand new building from the ground up in less than two weeks!

Commenting for Monodraught, technical director Nick Hopper says: “To say it was chaotic at times would be an understatement. Monodraught, and in particular all of the engineers involved in this project, are proud to be associated with such a great cause.”

The top cappings and skirts of the three Windcatcher X-Air units were finished in different colours – one red, one yellow and one orange; and all the louvres were painted grey.

Set to be one of DIY SOS’s biggest builds yet, the show needed to demolish the existing space and build an entirely new centre using a timber frame structure. Essentials included full wheelchair access, a dedicated sensory room, space for counselling, an office, workable disabled toilets, a working kitchen and an area for the kids to eat, along with distinct spaces for both the young and the older kids that attend the centre. In addition, the centre was set in two and a half acres, with woodland, antiquated climbing structures and a football pitch, whereas the children needed a safe space to play with accessible equipment, sensory stimulation and space to run around.

Specialist welding engineering company Arc Energy Resources is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Robinson to the Board of Directors, five years after leaving the University of Nottingham with a Degree in Economics.

During his time with the company, Andrew has focused on rationalising the purchasing function of the company’s fabrication and weld overlay cladding divisions, and was heavily involved in the £500,000 investment to acquire two new Rotating Head welding machines that have proved so effective in extending the size and scope of corrosion resistant coating contracts the company can handle. He has also developed the company’s environmental management system, gaining successful certification to ISO 14001:2004. As a Director, he will be tasked with developing the company’s ongoing strategy, including heading its aspirations to enter the civil nuclear market.

Andrew’s parents, Alan and Rosemary Robinson, are Managing Director and Finance Director of the Eastington-based engineering company, whose highly trained welding teams provide fabrication and weld overlay cladding services to the oil & gas and water treatment industries, as well as other sectors.

Welcoming her son to the board, Rosemary Robinson says the experience Andrew has gained in the past five years, together with his knowledge of economics and industry in general, continues to add a unique perspective and fresh thinking to the business.

In his spare time, Andrew plays piano, trumpet and guitar, is a member of Minchinhampton rugby club and, like his father, is a keen supporter of Gloucester Rugby Club.

Q8Oils has introduced Q8 T860 S, a 10W-40 heavy duty diesel oil (HDDO) that has been formulated to meet Scania’s LDF-III specification for trucks using the manufacturer’s diesel engines meeting the latest Euro V and VI emissions requirements.

Q8Oils claims that using its new Scania LDF-III approved engine oil will enable extended engine oil drain intervals to be used in Scania vehicles with Euro V engines (excluding Euro V - DC 16 21) without DPFs and Euro VI engines with. The company also claims that extended drain intervals can be 30% higher (up to 120,000 km) compared to its previous generation Q8 T860.

Although recommended for Scania’s 13 and 16 litre LDF-III engine oil specification Euro VI engines fitted with a DPF, Q8 T860 S can also be used for normally aspirated or turbocharged heavy-duty engines in commercial vehicles and off-highway equipment as the oil also meets ACEA E4 and E7; API CF; MAN 3277; MB 228.5; Renault RXD and RLD-2; and Volvo VDS-3 specifications.

Commenting for Q8Oils, automotive manager Andy Harris explains that the benefits of using Q8 T860 S for the end user don’t stop with increased drain intervals and the reduced maintenance costs associated with them. “From a cold start, our new HDDO provides excellent engine cleanliness and helps to limit engine wear by providing the correct lubrication to protect against bore polishingand cylinder and cam wear. It also helps to avoid the deposition of sludge from combustion soot, prohibits rust and corrosion and possesses good anti-foam characteristics.”

As part of Q8Oils and Optimum Oils strategic partner relationship, engineering graduates currently employed by two of Optimum Oils’ customers visited Q8Oils in September and took part in an induction course to provide them with a better understanding of Q8Oils and the wider industry.

The three graduates – William Barker from Go-Ahead and Dr Chau Man-chun and Derek Amponsah from Abellio – began their three-day experience at Q8Oils’ UK blending plant in Leeds. This was followed by a second day at Kuwait Petroleum’s Research & Technology (KPR&T) facility in Rotterdam and a third day at Antwerp’s blending plant. The three graduates were joined by Q8Oils’ James Thornton and Bob Stoker from Optimum Oils.

Explaining the importance of relationships with OEMs, KPR&T’s Adri van de Ven says that product knowledge and application training is a strategic tool for its employees and business partners alike, as it is essential that Q8Oils can provide the best possible advice to its customers to ensure the long term profitability of their businesses.

At each site the graduates received technical training and an in-depth induction on important topics including manufacturing, health and safety, planning and dispatch procedures. This provided the engineering graduates with a comprehensive understanding of Q8Oils products and how the company operates.

Commenting on the induction, Catherine Macklam, Key Account Co-ordinator for Q8Oils says: “It is crucial that we provide informative experiences and technical training such as this as it sets us apart from our competitors.”

Q8Oils UK technical sales manager Mike Phillips explains the recent developments in specialised lubricants for commercial vehicles and the important role they play in reducing engine emissions and improving fuel economy.

Think of a lubricant like a structure made of concrete and building blocks, where the foundations are so important for maximum strength and durability. With automotive lubricants this is where we start and the major consideration is the base oil as the carrier for additives, which collectively provide the levels of performance necessary for today’s modern vehicles.

For automotive lubricants we start with the base oil or base stock and there are three common descriptions found in the terminology used when products are formulated and later described in technical data or marketing brochures.

The first is Mineral Oil Base Stocks, which are refined from crude oil and feature a wide distribution of chemical structures. Secondly there are Synthetic Base Stocks, which are built from chemical reactions and control over composition and distribution. The third is Semi-Synthetic or Part-Synthetic, which is a combination of mineral and synthetic base stocks in various proportions, blended to achieve the desired level of performance required in the finished lubricant, without incurring any unnecessary cost increase.

Mineral base stocks are still widely used for automotive and industrial lubricants, but performance in certain areas such as low- and high-temperature stability, means they have limited use. This is where synthetic base stocks have become an essential part of today’s modern automotive lubricants. Synthetics possess excellent low- and high-temperature stability and resistance to oxidation, which helps to determine the life of the finished lubricant.

Engine and emission requirements

For many years the automotive industry has been developing new engines to comply with exhaust emission legislations, which become more stringent as the years go by. Road haulage vehicles play a major role in this process and the European industry is now at the Euro VI exhaust emission level. These modern engines are highly-technical and use sophisticated exhaust after-treatment systems to clean exhaust gases.

Automotive engine lubricants play an extremely important role in ensuring the most efficient operation of heavy duty engines both in component durability and extended oil drain intervals, which now exceed 100,000km for long haul vehicles. Synthetic engine lubricants are now in high demand, achieving the levels of performance commonly specified by the OEM’s. Significantly, low SAPS additive technology (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur) must now be used to ensure compatibility with expensive exhaust after-treatment systems and prevent the poisoning of catalysts. The wrong engine lubricant choice can be a very expensive mistake for the haulier, so the message is: check vehicle maintenance recommendations extremely carefully to ensure you are specifying the correct engine lubricant.

The common engine lubricant specifications recommended by OEMs will include references to ACEA (Europe) and API (USA). Do not ignore these OEM specifications as they are sometimes a requirement in addition to the industry standards for performance quality. Engine lubricant viscosity recommendations to the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards are now a key requirement, and will be specified according to climatic conditions wherever the vehicle will be used.

Biofuels are becoming more common and, while modern engine lubricants accommodate these fuels, there should be some consideration given to recommendations for users. The general opinion within the European automotive industry recommends halving the oil drain interval if you are not using EN590 fuel.

Fuel economy

Fuel economy is a major influence in the development of vehicles which, for several years, has included engine and transmission systems. A fuel efficient vehicle will not only use less fuel and reduce costs for the operator, but will also help to reduce exhaust emissions and meet legislation limits. Synthetic low-viscosity lubricants play an important role in reducing the internal friction in engine and transmission systems, and therefore have a positive effect on the overall vehicle fuel economy. It is now common for heavy duty vehicles to be using 10W-XX and 5W-XX engine lubricants and 75W-XX transmission lubricants.

Other lubricants and greases

For the hydraulic systems of certain heavy-duty vehicles, improved operating efficiency is now possible by using high VI (viscosity index) synthetic hydraulic fluids, which improve the hydraulic system’s efficiency and in turn, as hydraulic pumps are engine driven, the vehicle’s fuel economy.

Lubricating grease has also developed through the use of synthetic base oil technology, but what is grease?

The definition of grease is a “thickened fluid”, so it is the base oil carrier and additives that perform the lubrication function. The type of thickener specified for the application is there to keep the grease in position.

Modern grease formulations using synthetic base oil technology now deliver greater performance due to improved low- and high-temperature stability and resistance to oxidation. This means a longer operating life is possible depending on the application.

A telesales service available to Q8Oils automotive customers has provided Brindley Groups 12 Franchised Automotive Dealerships with 3151 confirmed service bookings and 166 MOT bookings in its first year, and resulted in 13,235 litres of additional Q8Oils being sold.

Equally impressive is the increase in profit of more than £370,000!

Founded more than 80 years ago in Wolverhampton, the Brindley Group is the largest family-owned car dealership group in the West Midlands with 12 franchised sites representing Honda cars and motorbikes, Vauxhall, Kia, Nissan, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Volvo and Hyundai.

All Brindley dealerships generate service and MOT bookings through an actively managed customer database using a combination of letters, emails and phone calls, all of which is relatively costly. So when Andy Harris of Q8Oils mentioned the Q8 Telesales service during one of his regular meetings with Brindley Group aftersales manager Darren Nicklin, Darren realised that it could help close a gap between where Brindley’s current customer service sales results were, and where he wanted them to be.

Says Darren: “The service focuses on calling current customers ahead of a scheduled service or MOT, taking time to discuss their ownership experience, and following the conversation by offering our service and MOT facilities and making a booking. And importantly for us, it does not include contacting lapsed customers.”

Darren was impressed enough to agree to a 60-day trial at one of Brindley’s sites and was extremely happy with the results achieved, so much so that he decided to stop the postal campaign, with its high cost and relatively low returns, and rolled out the Q8Oils campaign throughout the group’s 12 dealerships. Reporting on the roll-out Darren says the Group results were also excellent, adding that bookings were much higher, but even more impressive was the quality of the customer feedback, which was very encouraging.

Commenting on specific aspects of the response information, Darren says it highlighted how easy it can be to misunderstand the reasons why customers’ who had bought cars from Brindley didn’t continue as aftersales customers. “With 12 dealerships we were amazed how many new and used car customers had sold their vehicles after the first year and no longer needed our service facilities. We were also surprised how far new car buyers were prepared to travel to get the best deal, and were then choosing to service the cars closer to home rather than make the longer journey to reach us. And we found that many people who had bought used cars were servicing them at independent garages to save costs.”

Data and customer feedback from the programme was entered onto Brindley’s database, and as the telesales service continued the quality of data improved. In addition, Darren believes that, due to skills and training of the people who make the calls, they were actually having conversations with customers and were able to remind them of additional benefits such as Brindley’s collection and delivery service or suggest a more convenient Brindley Group dealership where appropriate.

Also important from a cost viewpoint, they were able to qualify customers who hadn’t responded to the group’s passive emails, texts and letters and who, for whatever reason, no longer qualified to be on the database, which meant that it was continually being cleaned.

Commenting on other benefits to the business, Darren says the Q8 Telesales programme proved that using annual new and used car sales figures to forecast future service and MOT business was flawed as it was based on unreliable information, so while the increase in bookings provided by the telesales calls is impressive, we believe the quality of customer feedback and the information available in ownership profiles has a far greater long-term benefit for the business.

“We now know that the people we are in touch with are genuine customers who have the potential to benefit from the offers we make. It also means that we no longer need to offer service or MOT discounts to customers that we know won’t use us, and it also questions the need to offer similar discounts to committed customers who are already happy with the service we provide.” He adds that in his role as Brindley’s aftersales manager he is now able to monitor the performance of the whole group based on unbiased results from an independent source, which he says gives him a much better understanding of the business.

Following the initial trial, the Q8 Telesales programme is still providing data more than 12 months later, having contacted approximately 50,000 Brindley’s customers and provided quality information and customer response data at no cost. So, if during a service call the customer mentions that a suspension problem needs attention the information is included without charge. Costs are only incurred when the programme provides actual service or MOT bookings, so Darren only pays for results that translate directly into profitable business for Brindley Group, with a typical MOT and service booking costing approximately £12.

The Brindley Group uses its own customer service team to offer activities such as vehicle health checks and brake system safety tests, and Darren says the close working relationship with Q8Oils ensures that customers are not ‘pestered’ by calls from both services and adds that the increases in service and MOT bookings has also generated additional sales of non-oil products through the dealerships.

Summing up, Darren says: “We have been a Q8Oils customer for 10 years and buy all our workshop lubricants from them. And while I accept that they will sell more oil as a result of this excellent customer relationship programme, I still think it is impressive that the service is free to car dealership customers. By helping us to create better relationships with our customers, Q8Oils has also reinforced an already strong relationship with the Brindley Group.”

Commenting for Q8Oils, AndyHarris says the first year result is impressive and proves that the Q8Oils’ customer relationship programme is extremely successful because customer data is current and accurate, and includes qualitative as well as quantitative information.

Q8Oils has extended its range of soluble cutting and grinding fluids with the introduction of Q8 Beethoven MPS, a multi-purpose, water mix metalworking fluid that delivers tangible cost savings by incorporating an extreme pressure additive that delivers extended tool life while providing excellent surface finish and outstanding corrosion protection. Further cost savings are achieved due to the fluid’s ease of maintenance, which extends fluid life and makes it especially suitable for centralised systems.

Commenting for Q8Oils, Mick Doxford says: “Q8 Beethoven MPS is formulated to provide an optimum balance between performance and economy, making it ideal for general machining on a wide range of materials and applications.”

The high detergency and excellent wetting properties of Q8 Beethoven MPS also ensure superior cleanliness by forming a highly-stable emulsion in both soft and hard waters to extend sump life and make sure that machines remain clean with no sticky deposits.
