Advanced Insulation, a leading manufacturer of technical coatings for the upstream oil and gas industry, will be launching a modular cryogenic spill protection tile system and promoting its range of unique, syntactic phenolic resin-based foam insulation and fire protection systems at this year’s Gastech Conference & Exhibition in Korea.

In addition, on Wednesday 26th March, Advanced Insulation’s Asaf Hisherik will be presenting a paper on Cryogenic Spill Protection at Gastech’s Centre of Technical Excellence (CoTE), using knowledge gained from his first class honours degree in civil engineering, his MBA and his experience of many years in civil/structural engineering for oil and gas facilities.

Asaf’s presentation, the culmination of a three year development project with key floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) operators, Korean fabrication yards and global engineering firms, will provide an overview of the requirements and system solutions for protection against cryogenic spillage on offshore FLNG facilities.
New on Advanced Insulation’s stand is the company’s ContraFlame® CSP & PFP cryogenic spill protection systems. Designed to support rapid application during construction or offshore retrofit, the fire-rated cryogenic spill protection systems consist of phenolic or polyester fiberglass reinforced tiles filled with ContraFlame C50 thermal insulation material. The system provides integrated thermal insulation and passive fire protection to J60 or H120 IMO classifications and thermal insulation for decks exposed to cryogenic spill.

Advanced Insulation will also be showcasing a range of products including its recently launched ContraFlame Under Deck Lightweight solutions, which takes full advantage of the proven corrosion under insulation (CUI) performance of Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame and ContraTherm® products.
The company claims that the application of its new lightweight technologies will revolutionise the industry and address the handling problems associated with traditional under-deck solutions, where a combination of up to four different systems are required to cope with the condensation, ice build-up, extreme heat and high humidity issues found above the cellar deck.

Commenting on its lightweight technologies, Advanced Insulation’s Asaf Hisherik says: “A combination of traditional solutions would typically result in significant weight and handling implications for many facilities. However, by applying our ContraFlame technology to develop a lightweight under deck system, we have provided weight savings of up to 60%.”

Experts from Advanced Insulation’s offices in the UK and Korea will be available throughout the exhibition and, with experience in both topside and subsea applications, are well placed to discuss the benefits of the lightweight system that has already been installed by major oil companies including Exxon, Chevron, Total, BP and Talisman.

With the growth of offshore platforms operating in extreme environments, the need for under deck insulation systems that can cope with a combination of condensation, ice build-up, extreme heat and high humidity above the cellar deck is becoming paramount.

Approved systems are designed to provide a number of operational and safety functions including thermal insulation (with typical U value ranges from 0.3 to 0.5 Wm²K); passive hydrocarbon pool and jet-fire protection per IMO classifications (e.g. H60 and J120); blast resistance systems to withstand blast overpressures of 0.2 to 1.2 bar; noise reduction to a typical range of Rw 30 to 51dB; impact resistance to withstand wave slam and ice build-up; and corrosion under insulation (CUI) longevity to maintain long term integrity and minimise the risk of CUI.

To achieve these requirements a traditional combination of as many as four different systems was required, typically resulting in significant weight implications.
To address these handling problems, Advanced Insulation – a leading provider of technical coatings including its unique syntactic phenolic resin-based foam insulation and fire protection systems – has applied its ContraFlame® technology to develop a lightweight under deck system that provides weight savings of up to 60% compared with traditional systems.

The ContraFlame Under Deck Lightweight solutions also provide integrated thermal insulation, passive fire protection, blast resistance and noise reduction in a single certified system. This also takes full advantage of the proven CUI performance of Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame and ContraTherm® products, both in topside and subsea applications.

Commenting for Advanced Insulation, marketing manager Asaf Hisherik says: “The greatly reduced time and cost saving benefits of the revolutionary ContraFlame lightweight under deck systems have already been acknowledged, with systems having been installed by major oil companies including Exxon, Chevron, Total, BP and Talisman.
Advanced Insulation offers three unique ContraFlame systems for under deck protection.

The C3 and C3pump motor controller range from PG Drives Technology – a product brand of Curtiss-Wright Industrial and leaders in control devices, medical mobility vehicle systems and equipment – are ideal for small industrial vehicle applications including Class 3 pallet trucks and stackers.

The C3 is a compact and cost-effective AC motor controller, which is primarily intended for Class 3 pallet trucks and stackers but is equally suitable for small ride-on machines. The C3 is available in two power options (200Arms and 250Arms at 24Vdc) thereby allowing the most cost-effective solution for an application. The controller can be quickly matched to any AC induction motor via PG Drives Technology’s simple, three step auto-commissioning sequence. The C3 can accept multiple types of throttle connections, including 2- or 3-wire resistive and voltage. Inputs are available for direction switches, tiller switch, belly-button, seat switch, speed reduction and drive/hydraulic inhibit, as well as lift and lower signals, both switch and proportional types. A CAN tiller compatible variant is also available.

The C3’s software controls all hydraulic functions and can easily cater for interlocking of drive with lift/lower. Hydraulic functions can also be disabled in response to certain conditions such as a low battery voltage. This capability reduces the possibility of battery damage as a result of deep-discharge. To ensure maximum efficiency, an intelligent Hill-Hold algorithm only draws power from the battery if the vehicle starts to roll, removing the traditional requirement for a brake switch.

The C3pump from PG Drives Technology combines the 200/250Arms AC traction drive of the C3 with a 330A DC pump drive for controlling the lifting hydraulics. Designed with all the specialist features required for efficient and precise control of modern day stackers, C3pump features include multiple 2A outputs (for proportional valve, solenoid valves, electro-magnetic brake, line contactor and horn), 2 analogue inputs and 8 switch inputs. The C3pump is also CAN tiller compatible as standard.

Already RoHS compliant and designed to meet EN1175, EN12895 and UL583 requirements, PG Drives Technology is currently developing its next-generation C3 and C3pump, which will be updated to conform to the latest EN13849 machinery safety standards.

PG Drives Technology control systems are used in electric vehicles serving the industrial and medical markets, including materials handling vehicles, floor-cleaning machines, powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The company's products deliver precise variable power from batteries to electric drive motors, and are fully programmable to suit various motor types, voltages and power levels. All products incorporate proprietary advanced motor control algorithms and available accessories include joystick controls, displays for battery state-of-charge and vehicle status, and field programming units.

Further information is available from the new-look PG Drives Technology website (www.pgdt.com) or by calling +44 (0)1425 271444.

COOL-PHASE®, Monodraught’s ceiling-mounted low-energy cooling and ventilation system featuring phase change material technology, has been installed in a busy laboratory at Bournemouth University to provide a more comfortable, environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient atmosphere for students working in the space.

The second-floor laboratory in Christchurch House regularly accommodates up to seventy students at the same time, carrying out practical scientific experiments.

With Bunsen burners and fume cupboards being used throughout the day, and seventy people, each student generating 100 Watts of heat gain combined with substantial levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), there were on-going problems with the 100 square metre space due to poor indoor air quality. Whilst the laboratory was fitted with windows, its second-floor location meant that restrictors were fitted; so the limited amount of fresh air entering the space was not enough to reach all areas of the ‘deep-plan’ space.

The University’s Estates Department decided it was time to address the problem and the Henderson Green mechanical/electrical engineering consultancy based in Southampton, which supplies design services to Bournemouth University on a range of projects, was briefed to improve environmental conditions within the space.

Henderson Green managing director Russell Pitman says first thoughts involved traditional approaches such as AC units or a roof-mounted air handling unit pumping fresh air into the laboratory.

But having discussed options with the University’s Environment & Energy Team it was decided to investigate alternatives that would also provide a low carbon solution.

Commenting for the University, the Estates Department’s Energy Officer (Technical) Dave Archer says that during the initial search he came across a Cool-phase article in a HVAC journal and decided to add the new system to the list.

The Cool-phase system, which reduces the running costs of buildings and creates a fresh and healthy indoor environment without compressors or hazardous coolants, can maintain temperatures within the comfort zone, while radically reducing energy consumption by up to 90% compared to conventional cooling systems.

Henderson Green was then asked to undertake a feasibility study to establish whether Cool-phase could handle the two key objectives – the fresh air requirements and the cooling load; and Monodraught was asked to design the system and provide calculations to confirm it could achieve the required flow rates, etc.

Says Russell: “We reviewed, and eventually tested, Monodraught’s Cool-phase system against the air handling option and found that from the energy-saving viewpoint Cool-phase won hands-down, with relatively little increase in cost. Encouraged, we then went into a more detailed phase with Monodraught to ensure that the initial calculations matched the requirements of the space in everyday operational conditions.”

Once the air quality calculations and financial appraisals were completed and the University was satisfied that the system would do the job, Cool-phase was given the green light and two systems were installed in the laboratory by Monodraught, as part of a turnkey contract with one of the University’s approved building contractors.

Commenting on the installation Russell Pitman says everything went very smoothly, the project was delivered on time, with a minimum of fuss and no real issues and commenting on the Cool-phase itself he says it is almost too good to be true because it ticks every box.

Regarding the consultation period, he says Monodraught was very professional; and very flexible in incorporating changes the University team wanted to make to the initial calculations.

“In all, the working relationship was a very pleasant experience.” He says: “Work to install the two Cool-phase systems was carried out over four days, and even though some minor structural issues were encountered, the work didn’t stop – Monodraught’s team worked around the problems so that everything went smoothly and the job was delivered on time.” He adds that, besides improvements to the laboratory environment the Cool-phase system is also very quiet in operation, which is ideal in a space that is used for lectures.

Since completion of the installation Monodraught has been monitoring the laboratory’s environment to gather its own data, and the University Estates Department has also been recording data from the Cool-phase system on its BMS. Performance data from both parties will be reviewed to establish the overall effectiveness of the installation.

Dave Archer says Monodraught Windcatchers and Sunpipes are located in other areas of the campus and they have also proved to be very effective, so while it is too early to be definitive, early indications are that the Cool-phase system will perform to specification. He also anticipates that, at the end of the first year, the data will enable the Cool-phase software to optimise the system’s performance to best suit the laboratory space.

Cool-phase, Windcatcher and Sunpipe are registered trademarks owned by Monodraught Limited.

Alan Robinson, managing director of Gloucestershire based weld overlay cladding and fabrication specialist Arc Energy Resources, has been presented with an award as the Best Welding Coordinator by the European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF) in November 2013 at a ceremony in Portugal. The Award, which is only open to holders of a European Welding Engineer diploma, recognises Alan’s long-term achievement in delivering the responsibilities of a welding coordinator in accordance with ISO 14731 and ISO 3834‐2. Welding organisations from thirty countries were invited to nominate their best welding coordinator for the prestigious award and Alan Robinson from the United Kingdom was selected as overall winner.

Alan has a European Welding Engineer diploma and is a Senior Member of The Welding Institute. He is also a certified European Welding Engineer (EWE), has a Masters Degree in welding, and is a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council. He founded Arc Energy Resources 20 years ago and, in addition to his role as head of welding engineering, he still maintains an active involvement in all aspects of the company’s development.

Commenting on the award Alan said, ‘I recognised early in my career as a welding engineer that the output of a welded product could not be judged with any certainty after the event.  I was at that time moving from the brutal ‘test to destruction’ methods used by the mining industry to the defect evaluation non-destructive techniques employed in the nuclear industry – both equally as effective.  In the days when BS 5750 reigned as the quality standard, welding was viewed always with suspicion.  Consequently, throughout my career I have always endeavoured to ensure that the welding process was considered as a process that needed to provide proven evidence of adherence to procedure from start to finish’.

Today, Arc Energy Resources employs 70 people and has an impressive list of qualifications including ASME U, U2 & National Board R Stamps, ISO 9001:2008 quality management system, ISO 14001:2004 environment management system, Investors in People (bronze) and OHSAS 18001 health and safety management system. The company also remains one of relatively few welding specialists that have certified compliances with ISO 3834-2 welding quality standard, including conformance to ISO 14731 Welding Coordination.

Alan is keen to ensure that future engineers have the opportunity to learn about welding and apply their skills in order to develop the business further.  Consequently his company is providing both welder and graduate apprenticeships and is supporting welding engineering training through the TWI training schemes.  Cont’d

The company encourages young people in engineering learning, regularly entertaining students for work experience and supporting educational initiatives that encourage STEM subjects such as the EDT Go4Set project.

Curtiss-Wright Industrial – a member of Curtiss-Wright Corporation and leaders in control devices and systems for industrial and medical vehicles and equipment – will be using its stand at the 2014 Autosport Engineering show in January to promote products from Penny + Giles Controls and introduce its partner brands Arens Controls, PG Drives Technology and Williams Controls.

New for this year’s show is the NRH275DR from Penny + Giles, which was originally designed for use on specialist vehicles destined for extreme and hostile environments, but is also proving of interest for motorsport applications. This latest rotary position sensor features a slim, low-profile sensor housing and separate permanent magnet assembly and is ideal for throttle position sensing and feedback applications. With no contacting mechanical parts that can wear, the lightweight and low-profile design of the sensor means it can be mounted where installation space is limited, e.g. the pivot point of the throttle pedal.

Also on show will be a selection of products from Williams Controls including its electronic throttle pedals which, in partnership with Polaris Industries – a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative, high quality off-road vehicles (ORVs), including all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles, motorcycles and on-road electric/hybrid powered vehicles – has been selected for use on the company’s recently-launched RZR XP 1000, which has been credited as providing the fastest acceleration, highest top speed and flattest torque curve in the industry.

Curtiss-Wright Industrial will also be using Autosport Engineering to showcase AC Induction and DC Motor Controllers from PG Drives Technology and its latest acquisition, Arens Controls.

Established in 1929 and now a leading manufacturer and supplier of high-pressure compression fittings, valves and bespoke instrumentation products for the oil, gas and water industries, Waverley Brownall is used to manufacturing complex parts from difficult-to-machine metals including stainless steel, super duplex, Incoloy and Hastelloy. However, in recent years, the company has experienced unacceptable short sump life periods and bad odours from its metalworking fluids. Eventually Q8Oils was invited to visit Waverly Brownall to assess the problems first hand and provide a sustainable resolution.

A requirement of Waverley Brownall’s new cutting fluid was to therefore increase sump life and eliminate the offensive odours emitted, but to also minimise machine downtime related to changing systems and reduce the waste produced as a consequence of the very short fluid life.

Commenting for Waverley Brownall, workshop manager Dennis Whitefield says: “Our last couple of suppliers just haven’t been up to scratch. Towards the end of the relationship with our previous supplier, the cutting fluids were very oily, built up residues rapidly and just weren’t up to standard. Before that, the fluids from another major oil supplier made our machines rusty.”

Since Q8Oils began supplying neat and soluble metalworking fluids for all the machine tool types and material specifications, Waverley Brownall noticed an immediate improvement. A typical example is one particular CNC machine dedicated to the manufacture of compression fittings, where Q8 Baroni XCIH is now being used to machine 316L stainless steel. Previously, a congealed layer used to build up on the top of the existing cutting fluid, but with the new Q8Oils product now operational, there is no contamination. The Q8 Baroni XCIH metalworking fluid is remaining stable and lasting longer. In fact, Waverley Brownall is reporting that Q8 Baroni XCIH is lasting at least twice as long as the previous cutting fluid and tramp oil has returned to acceptable levels, thus limiting the use of its tramp oil removal equipment.

Having been astonished at the durability and performance of the Q8Oils range, another surprise for Waverley Brownall was cost, reporting very little difference in price between its original supplier and Q8Oils. Further cost savings have also been achieved through a reduced maintenance schedule as the company doesn’t have to constantly monitor the condition and consistency of its metalworking fluids as the concentration remains stable throughout the lifecycle of the fluid.

Q8 Baroni XCIH is a semi-synthetic, water-mix metalworking fluid for general machining of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It has been developed to keep machines extremely clean throughout the life of the coolant and provide enhanced lubrication characteristics at the tool chip interface. The inclusion of advanced chemistry with in the formulation also allows Q8 Baroni XCIH to perform on par with traditional fully-synthetic grinding fluids, whilst ensuring machine protection and high standards of surface finish. To comply with local legislation, waste treatment and environmental requirements, it does not contain added chlorine, sulphur, creosols, phenols or nitrites and its bio-stable properties mean that the emulsion does not degrade or produce bad odours.

Summarising, Dennis Whitefield says: “We needed a range of metalworking fluids that could easily match the performance of our CNCs, which are machining over 600 compression fittings and valves per week. Q8 Baroni XCIH and Q8Oils’ range of neat and soluble cutting fluids provide us with that performance and, in the process, have also helped to reduce costs.”

Optimum Oils, Q8Oils’ Strategic Partner for the UK bus and coach market, is supplying the vast mix of buses and locomotives in Go-Ahead Group’s UK operations with Q8 lubricants and Optimum antifreeze.

Optimum offers a second tier management service for specialist lubricants specified primarily by OEMs during the initial bus and locomotive warranty periods.

Q8Oils and Optimum closely monitor the requirements for performance lubricants, which are driven by OEM’s specifications to ensure that where possible, Q8Oils’ grades not only meet but exceed the specification. The benefit to Go-Ahead is the “One Stop Shop Approach” that helps to reduce the number of suppliers Go-Ahead has to deal with, which in turn, makes Go-Ahead more efficient.

Frank Darch, Technical Support Manager for Go-Ahead London stresses the importance of not merely supplying lubricants and antifreeze at the right cost; but also ensuring that lubricant grades comply with the latest edition of the ever changing OEM specifications. He adds that drain periods in particular, are monitored closely in London’s aggressive transport environment where operational hours are predominant rather than kilometres travelled.

Based in Go-Ahead’s Merton office, Frank says the eighteen garages in south, south west, south east, and north London are responsible for servicing over 2,000 vehicles involving all major engines, gearboxes and axles and, as part of the service, identifying reasons for failures. This involves aspects such as oil monitoring and analysis. He writes the servicing requirements for all Go-Ahead bus types, which are numerous due to mergers, takeovers and acquisitions over the years. These documents are then passed to each of the garages to ensure that every vehicle in the Go-Ahead fleet is serviced to the same high standards and is signed off on a service check sheet. The service documents record and define the length of time that oils and lubricants for engines, gearboxes and axles stay in the units between services, to ensure that Go-Ahead achieves the best possible service life.

Says Frank: “We have used other suppliers and oils over the years but for the past nine years we have been very happy with the Optimum and Q8Oils strategic partnership.”

Optimum provides the most effective Q8 oil for each application, carries out monitoring and oil analysis regularly and recommends and carries out trials on new products where appropriate. They also help to ensure that Go-Ahead maintains the prescribed oil change intervals, especially in engines where optimising oil change intervals is vital to optimising engine life. Optimum and Q8Oils also provide updates on new products and arrange trails if they believe a new product will help to improve the performance of the Go-Ahead fleet. Says Frank: “We are currently running trials of a new grease specifically designed to repel water washout during chassis washes. It is typical of the way Go-Ahead and Optimum work very well together to get the absolute best out of the Q8 oils and lubricants, and in all the years we have been using Q8Oils products we have never had an issue, despite having engines that are twelve years old. I think that proves the efficiency of the Q8Oils products.”

Oil monitoring and analysis is one of the main services Optimum undertakes for Go-Ahead and from the data received the service intervals are worked out for each bus. This is a key function in the relationship and Frank believes it results in the excellent engine life Go-Ahead achieves for its fleet. Whilst engines themselves have changed dramatically in the 25 years since Frank began his job, and modern engines are now so good, he insists that they still need the best oils to keep them operating and in the best condition. Optimum will deal with specific issues within a garage or on an individual engine, gearbox or axle and this is where their service is vital, providing expertise and oil analysis to solve problems for the eighteen Go-Ahead garages. And as Frank explains: “Whilst oil has a finite life we rely on Optimum and Q8Oils to give us the best advice and ensure that the technology within the Q8 oils we use, helps us achieve the best balance of performance and operational life.”

Go-Ahead is using Q8 T750 in most of its London garages and whilst all Go-Ahead buses are serviced every four weeks, oil change intervals for engines, gearboxes and axles/differentials are carried out to different schedules according to mileage, route, age, etc. Some gearboxes may need oil changes once or twice a year and others, especially the newer gearboxes, will have much longer intervals. But with so many different vehicles, operating schedules and routes, it is vital that schedules and the oil change intervals are strictly maintained.

In the Go-Ahead operation an annual oil change for 2,000 vehicles just isn’t an option so the service teams rely on their own experts, working with Optimum, to schedule when individual vehicles and even individual engines, gearboxes and axles, need oil changes. Because it is a partnership, Optimum and Q8Oils work closely with Go-Ahead to decide as a team when oil changes need to be carried out.

What also influences the schedules are the significant variations in the routes and mileages of vehicles. Even within individual garages in London the differences are extraordinary. Whilst this is understandable with transmissions, for engines the hours they are actually running on their routes need to be monitored as well as mileage. The impact of all these factors can be identified during oil analysis programmes and the data received definitely helps Go-Ahead to achieve the very best from the Q8 oils, from their engines and transmissions and therefore, their vehicles. And it does work. The Go-Ahead quality system can interrogate individual vehicle schedules and the figures are impressive – some of the change intervals of the Q8 oils, especially on the more modern vehicles, are running for incredible intervals between oil changes.

With new vehicles, where engine and transmission life can now reach fifteen years and more, service intervals are initially determined by the warranty, but once that expires, oil analysis is undertaken to set benchmarks for future service intervals, dependant on performance during warranty and with input from Optimum and Q8Oils.

Summing up, Frank Darch says “Everything we work on together is very focused and specific to achieving our needs, which is why the relationship with Optimum and Q8Oils is so successful and has lasted as long as it has.”
