Specialist welding engineering company Arc Energy Resources is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Robinson to the Board of Directors, five years after leaving the University of Nottingham with a Degree in Economics.

During his time with the company, Andrew has focused on rationalising the purchasing function of the company’s fabrication and weld overlay cladding divisions, and was heavily involved in the £500,000 investment to acquire two new Rotating Head welding machines that have proved so effective in extending the size and scope of corrosion resistant coating contracts the company can handle. He has also developed the company’s environmental management system, gaining successful certification to ISO 14001:2004. As a Director, he will be tasked with developing the company’s ongoing strategy, including heading its aspirations to enter the civil nuclear market.

Andrew’s parents, Alan and Rosemary Robinson, are Managing Director and Finance Director of the Eastington-based engineering company, whose highly trained welding teams provide fabrication and weld overlay cladding services to the oil & gas and water treatment industries, as well as other sectors.

Welcoming her son to the board, Rosemary Robinson says the experience Andrew has gained in the past five years, together with his knowledge of economics and industry in general, continues to add a unique perspective and fresh thinking to the business.

In his spare time, Andrew plays piano, trumpet and guitar, is a member of Minchinhampton rugby club and, like his father, is a keen supporter of Gloucester Rugby Club.
With the growth of offshore platforms operating in extreme environments, the need for under deck insulation systems that can cope with a combination of condensation, ice build-up, extreme heat and high humidity above the cellar deck is becoming paramount.

Approved systems are designed to provide a number of operational and safety functions including thermal insulation (with typical U value ranges from 0.3 to 0.5 Wm²K); passive hydrocarbon pool and jet-fire protection per IMO classifications (e.g. H60 and J120); blast resistance systems to withstand blast overpressures of 0.2 to 1.2 bar; noise reduction to a typical range of Rw 30 to 51dB; impact resistance to withstand wave slam and ice build-up; and corrosion under insulation (CUI) longevity to maintain long term integrity and minimise the risk of CUI.

To achieve these requirements a traditional combination of as many as four different systems was required, typically resulting in significant weight implications.
To address these handling problems, Advanced Insulation – a leading provider of technical coatings including its unique syntactic phenolic resin-based foam insulation and fire protection systems – has applied its ContraFlame® technology to develop a lightweight under deck system that provides weight savings of up to 60% compared with traditional systems.

The ContraFlame Under Deck Lightweight solutions also provide integrated thermal insulation, passive fire protection, blast resistance and noise reduction in a single certified system. This also takes full advantage of the proven CUI performance of Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame and ContraTherm® products, both in topside and subsea applications.

Commenting for Advanced Insulation, marketing manager Asaf Hisherik says: “The greatly reduced time and cost saving benefits of the revolutionary ContraFlame lightweight under deck systems have already been acknowledged, with systems having been installed by major oil companies including Exxon, Chevron, Total, BP and Talisman.
Advanced Insulation offers three unique ContraFlame systems for under deck protection.

ContraFlame JF120 offers fully bonded integral thermal insulation and passive fire protection to J120; H60 blast overpressure to 4.2 bar; and thermal conductivity of 0.054 Wm-¹K-¹. It also offers typical U values 0.57 W/m²K; a system thickness of 90mm; and weight of 31 kg/m².

The ContraFlame MS400 bonded pre-formed panel offers integral thermal insulation and hydrocarbon fire protection to H120 and thermal conductivity of 0.032 Wm-¹K-¹. U values for ContraFlame MS400 are typically 0.229 W/m²K, with a system thickness of 107mm and weight of just 14.3 kg/m².

Finally, its ContraFlame JF120 acoustic bonded pre-formed panels offer integral thermal insulation and jet fire protection to J120 and H60; acoustic noise reduction to Rw 51dB; and thermal conductivity of 0.054 Wm-¹K-¹. It also offers typical U values of 0.16 W/m²K; a system thickness of 226mm; and weight of 52.4 kg/m².

Curtiss-Wright Controls Industrial – a member of Curtiss-Wright Corporation and leaders in control devices and systems for industrial and medical vehicles and equipment – has been supplying its Penny + Giles joystick controllers to GRAMMER EiA Electronics (formerly EiA Electronics) for many years, so when a more ruggedised joystick with improved feedback was required for the latest Massey Ferguson MF7600 series of tractors, GRAMMER EiA Electronics had no hesitation in turning to Penny + Giles for the solution.

Explaining the requirements for the new joystick, GRAMMER EiA Electronics’ programme manager Marko Boving says that Massey Ferguson wanted a joystick controller with differentiated outputs on all the axes and an overpress function that would provide the positive feedback that is so important to Massey Ferguson’s customers.

As a leading system integrator GRAMMER EiA Electronics is working with customers around the world to create ergonomic operator working environments for tractors, excavators, wheeled-loaders and fork-lift trucks. The company’s multimedia operator interfaces, similar to BMW’s i-Drive on road cars, are typically operated from its standard arm-rest range using custom joystick and handle solutions.

And this, as Marko Boving explains, is why GRAMMER EiA Electronics works closely with Penny + Giles.

“Penny + Giles already has an excellent range of joysticks, handles and interfaces so we don’t need to develop our own such products. Consequently, we rely on their expertise from initial development right through to production. For this project we were asked to supply an alternative to a current Massey Ferguson joystick, with a specific requirement that it should provide the same feel and functionality. We passed a very detailed product and systems brief to Penny + Giles and they developed a joystick to our specification.” He says.

An important element of the brief was the need for overpress functionality in every axis with improved feel on the shorter stroke, in order to achieve more direct and positive feedback.  Penny + Giles latest ‘ruggedised’ JC8000 joystick controller already had the independent axis functionality built into its design and features a spring on each axis, which helped to achieve the desired forward and right directional operation as well as the operator feel that the customer wanted. The joystick always returns to centre but when it is pushed forward or right it provides a ‘click’ to let the operator know that his instruction has been achieved. The vehicle electronics system from GRAMMER EiA Electronics recognises the overpress decision and translates it into a machine action e.g. return-to-dig or return-to-load.

Within the standard JC8000 design the outputs are configurable to meet the customer’s requirements, making it a very flexible unit that can be programmed beyond the standard ‘square’ outputs. The overpress facility is programmable to allow the JC8000 to deliver more travel in each direction, which in the GRAMMER EiA Electronics version is both right and forward. The joystick provides an analogue output that feeds into a CAN node on the vehicle’s control arm.

The JC8000 is offered exclusively on MF7600 Series vehicles fitted with a front bucket. Standard operation employs switches but most buyers taking the bucket also choose the optional joystick, which is proving so popular with machine operators that it is almost a standard-fit item.

The heavy-duty JC8000 is a relative newcomer to the Penny + Giles joystick controller range, which has been specially engineered with a number of high-strength features. This makes it ideal for applications in physically-demanding working conditions such as skid steer loader controls or where operators traditionally use hydraulic joysticks. The increased strength of the JC8000 has been achieved by increasing the body material around the area supporting the operating lever; increasing the operating lever’s diameter; and changing its pivot geometry. These fundamental changes have enabled the joystick to handle increased torque and improved the lever’s bending and applied loads.

Designed for the most challenging applications, the JC8000 can withstand a 380Nm overload on the X and Y axes and 2000Nm on the vertical. It has also been tested to more than 60 million operations (15 million cycles) under laboratory conditions.

Summing up, Marko Boving says: “Penny + Giles created a very effective solution, developed and delivered a very reliable product, and we were absolutely satisfied with the service they provided throughout.”

As Kevin Rayment explains, with the recent acquisition and merger comes an increased resource of dedicated engineers. “CWCI engineers have extensive knowledge across a wide range of industries and applications so, by working closely and directly with OEMs to achieve a better understanding of their requirements, we are able to respond quickly to a specific brief by customising existing products or creating new products and concepts to better suit their applications and specifications.”

To complement its sales and support facilities, CWCI also boasts a dedicated conceptual development centre at its Portland, Oregon facility, which can produce samples in as a little as 48 hours and thereby reduce the development cycle time to market. In fact, in 2012 alone, this state-of-the-art facility was credited with completing and fully testing 1,300 sample assemblies, 600 custom lab fixtures and 150 assembly line fixtures. And at one stage, over 5,400 parts were produced in a 20-day period.

All products from each of CWCI’s seven global manufacturing facilities, are fully EMC and environmentally tested – from temperature, pressure and static load, to highly-accelerated life testing and stress screening (HALT/HASS); and compliance to specific truck, bus and MPV vehicles standards. CWCI also follows APQP, PFMEA, DFMEA and PPAP quality assurance procedures and in addition holds key certifications for the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system, ISO 14001:2004 environmental management system and TS16949 automotive quality system.

Williams Controls
Just a month after the PGDT acquisition, US electronic sensors and throttle controls manufacturer Williams Controls announced a merger with Curtiss-Wright Corporation’s Controls Industrial (formerly Motion Control) business. Williams Controls, which was established in 1937, is a leading designer and manufacturer of highly-engineered electronic sensors and electronic throttle controls for off-highway equipment, heavy trucks, military vehicles and materials handling applications.

Summarising the significant strengthening and expansion of Curtiss-Wright's existing industrial controls business, Kevin Rayment says it is another step towards the group’s vision to be the supplier of choice for driver control subsystems in specialty vehicles.

CWCI has taken the opportunity to launch its own website (www.cwc-ind.com), which features details on the group’s product range, capabilities and manufacturing resources while also including an aggregated newsroom for the group’s media updates. Additionally there have been major updates to the websites for its three industrial brands.

Williams Controls (www.wmco.com) benefits from a completely new site featuring its latest products, shortform brochures, manuals, technical datasheets and reports of recent installations. PG Drives Technology (www.pgdt.com) also benefits from similar features for the company’s electronic control systems. Having recently undergone an extensive refresh, the Penny + Giles Controls website (www.pennyandgiles.com) has been significantly updated to reflect the group’s new corporate identity.

Products from all three CWCI brands will be shown together for the first time during 2013 at shows including Beijing International Construction Equipment (BICES), CeMAT Asia and Agritechnica. The range includes position sensors, joystick and throttle controllers, solenoid actuators and electric control systems suitable for a wide range of specialty vehicle applications including agricultural vehicles, heavy trucks and buses, powered access platforms, backhoe excavators and airport fire and rescue vehicles.

Further information is available from the Curtiss-Wright Controls Industrial website (www.cwc-ind.com) or by calling +44 (0)1425 271444.

Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that its Industrial division will be supplying Williams Controls electronic throttles to Polaris Industries for use on its RANGER and recently-launched RZR XP 1000 vehicles.

As vehicle volumes increase, Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) – a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative, high quality off-road vehicles (ORVs), including all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles, motorcycles and on-road electric/hybrid powered vehicles – is opting for Williams Controls throttles as part of its decision to move away from conventional push/pull mechanical systems to electronic control.

Engineering teams from both companies worked together for almost eighteen months to re-engineer an existing Williams Controls pedal design, with the resulting electronic pedal needing to be sized and ergonomically shaped to suit the compact in-cabin dimensions of the all-new RZR XP 1000. During the product development phase, the Williams Controls team engineered a new spring design and, using its in-house rapid prototyping facilities, an altered lever arm.

The updated specifications for the new electronic throttle also included the use of an integrated, non-contacting Hall-effect sensor providing two independent linear output signals proportional to pedal position. This sensor provided feedback directly to Polaris’ latest throttle management system – credited as providing the fastest acceleration, highest top speed and flattest torque curve in the industry – to provide much-improved control.

What seemed like relatively simple design changes to the existing pedal actually required a complete revalidation of the Williams Controls custom pedal to ensure its suitability for both Polaris applications. This included testing it for both U.S. and European market requirements and a series of environmental assessments.

Despite some of the harshest tests ever carried out on its products – including corrosion resistance and ice water shock tests – the pedal out-performed the requirements of both companies. In fact, for the corrosion resistance test conducted in a salt fog chamber, the custom pedal far exceeded Williams Controls’ own 96 hour requirement and easily met the Polaris requirement of 336 hours. Upon completion of the environmental testing process, Williams Controls was able to provide Polaris with working samples for pre-production and field-testing, which has been completed successfully.

Commenting on the stringent testing requirements, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Curtiss-Wright’s Industrial division Kevin Rayment explains that, given the conditions Polaris vehicles have to endure, they are delighted with the results. “It’s not unusual for these recreational vehicles to be found driving through swamps or in muddy water up to the driver’s waist, so to not just pass but exceed these somewhat unique requirements is a testament to our design, engineering and manufacturing processes.”

Curtiss-Wright Industrial – a member of Curtiss-Wright Corporation and leaders in control devices and systems for industrial and medical vehicles and equipment – will be using its stand at the 2014 Autosport Engineering show in January to promote products from Penny + Giles Controls and introduce its partner brands Arens Controls, PG Drives Technology and Williams Controls.

New for this year’s show is the NRH275DR from Penny + Giles, which was originally designed for use on specialist vehicles destined for extreme and hostile environments, but is also proving of interest for motorsport applications. This latest rotary position sensor features a slim, low-profile sensor housing and separate permanent magnet assembly and is ideal for throttle position sensing and feedback applications. With no contacting mechanical parts that can wear, the lightweight and low-profile design of the sensor means it can be mounted where installation space is limited, e.g. the pivot point of the throttle pedal.

Also on show will be a selection of products from Williams Controls including its electronic throttle pedals which, in partnership with Polaris Industries – a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative, high quality off-road vehicles (ORVs), including all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles, motorcycles and on-road electric/hybrid powered vehicles – has been selected for use on the company’s recently-launched RZR XP 1000, which has been credited as providing the fastest acceleration, highest top speed and flattest torque curve in the industry.

Advanced Insulation Gastech 2014, Stand H190

Advanced Insulation, a leading manufacturer of technical coatings for the upstream oil and gas industry, will be launching a modular cryogenic spill protection tile system and promoting its range of unique, syntactic phenolic resin-based foam insulation and fire protection systems at this year’s Gastech Conference & Exhibition in Korea.

In addition, on Wednesday 26th March, Advanced Insulation’s Asaf Hisherik will be presenting a paper on Cryogenic Spill Protection at Gastech’s Centre of Technical Excellence (CoTE), using knowledge gained from his first class honours degree in civil engineering, his MBA and his experience of many years in civil/structural engineering for oil and gas facilities.

Asaf’s presentation, the culmination of a three year development project with key floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) operators, Korean fabrication yards and global engineering firms, will provide an overview of the requirements and system solutions for protection against cryogenic spillage on offshore FLNG facilities.
New on Advanced Insulation’s stand is the company’s ContraFlame® CSP & PFP cryogenic spill protection systems. Designed to support rapid application during construction or offshore retrofit, the fire-rated cryogenic spill protection systems consist of phenolic or polyester fiberglass reinforced tiles filled with ContraFlame C50 thermal insulation material. The system provides integrated thermal insulation and passive fire protection to J60 or H120 IMO classifications and thermal insulation for decks exposed to cryogenic spill.

Advanced Insulation will also be showcasing a range of products including its recently launched ContraFlame Under Deck Lightweight solutions, which takes full advantage of the proven corrosion under insulation (CUI) performance of Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame and ContraTherm® products.
The company claims that the application of its new lightweight technologies will revolutionise the industry and address the handling problems associated with traditional under-deck solutions, where a combination of up to four different systems are required to cope with the condensation, ice build-up, extreme heat and high humidity issues found above the cellar deck.

Commenting on its lightweight technologies, Advanced Insulation’s Asaf Hisherik says: “A combination of traditional solutions would typically result in significant weight and handling implications for many facilities. However, by applying our ContraFlame technology to develop a lightweight under deck system, we have provided weight savings of up to 60%.”

Experts from Advanced Insulation’s offices in the UK and Korea will be available throughout the exhibition and, with experience in both topside and subsea applications, are well placed to discuss the benefits of the lightweight system that has already been installed by major oil companies including Exxon, Chevron, Total, BP and Talisman.

Advanced Insulation – a leading manufacturer of technical coatings for the upstream oil and gas industry – has launched ContraFlame® CSP & PFP, a fire-rated cryogenic spill protection tile system designed to support rapid application during construction or offshore retrofit projects.

This new modular, multi-functional tile system provides integrated thermal insulation and passive fire protection to J60 or H120 IMO classifications, and thermal insulation for decks exposed to cryogenic spill.

ContraFlame CSP phenolic or polyester fiberglass-reinforced tiles are filled with Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame C50 thermal insulation material. The micro-cellular structure of C50’s syntactic foam is derived from lightweight additives rather than through blowing agents, which creates a closed-cell structure that is unaffected by water even when fully immersed.
Ideal for internal and vertical panelling use on floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) projects, ContraFlame CSP has been tested for cryogenic spills of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at -164°C for 2h50m which, during tests, limited the back face temperature of the steel to -28°C.

Each robust 0.5m x 1.0m ContraFlame CSP tile is 34mm thick and weighs 16kgs; is impervious to water and can withstand chemical or acid spills. They are designed for continuous use at operating temperatures from -40°C to +150°C and are tested to withstand thermal shock to -196°C in LIN spillage conditions. ContraFlame CSP also prevents corrosion under insulation (CUI) and provides outstanding physical performance for creep and fatigue in the marine environment.

ContraFlame CSP systems are made-to-order to meet the bespoke design requirements of each project. Being a dry-fit system with removable sections, the tiles are quick and easy to apply – requiring only adhesive bonding to fix the tiles to a primed deck. This, with suitable training and under the supervision of Advanced Insulation’s technicians, means the modular system can be easily installed using local labour.
