Curtiss-Wright Corporation’s (NYSE: CW) Industrial division today announced the addition of a new 36V version of the C3 motor controller to its established and cost-effective range of PG Drives Technology branded AC motor controllers.

The new C3-36V, which will carry the PG Drives Technology name – a long-standing, specialist brand in the supply of electronic controls for floor-care machinery - is designed for compliance with international floor-care standards – including EN 60335-2-72.

Operating from a 36V battery supply, the C3-36V is an advanced, compact, AC traction controller for ride-on cleaning machines. Constructed using UL approved materials throughout and designed to comply with UL 583, the controller is equally suitable for other small, ride-on vehicles operating from 36V batteries.

Simple programming enables the C3-36V controller to be compatible with all types of AC induction motors. It also accepts multiple throttle and brake pedal types, including 2- or 3-wire resistive and voltage. CANopen hardware is provided as standard, offering vehicle OEMs maximum input flexibility.

To ensure maximum efficiency, the C3-36V uses an intelligent Hill-Hold function that only takes power from the battery if the vehicle starts to roll. As soon as the system detects that Hill-Hold is not required, no further power is consumed. Traditionally, application of a brake switch has been necessary to provide this function.

The new C3-36V controller uses innovative construction methods to ensure reliable and repeatable assembly of the electronic enclosure, resulting in consistent protection of the electronic circuits from the environment and efficient transfer of heat to the baseplate.

The expansion of Q8Oils’ recently launched engine oil lubricants for stationary gas engines is continuing with the introduction of Q8 Mahler G5 and Q8 Mahler GR5.

The formulation technology of the Q8 Mahler range has been successfully proven across a variety of engines for over 20 years and globally, there are an estimated 3,750 engines filled with Q8 Mahler and running for 15 million hours, every year.

Commenting for Q8Oils, energy specialist Tony O’Keeffe says: “Customers can be assured that Q8 Mahler G will help reduce operating costs by reducing oil consumption and extending drain intervals.”

For one MWM engine customer, switching to Q8 Mahler G5 reduced its maintenance costs by 8.7%. For another customer operating two GE Jenbacher engines, drain intervals were extended by 54% following a switch to Q8 Mahler G10 from a competitor’s oil.

Q8 Mahler G5 is a medium ash oil for natural gas applications operating under mild to severe conditions. Developed with a low deposit tendency and high resistance against pre-ignition or knocking, this latest oil is ideal for high-pressure engines operating at 22bar or above and is also suitable for those with a lower BMEP. To reduce lubricant inventory, it can also be used to lubricate reciprocating compressors where natural gas is compressed but does not exceed pressures of 10,000kPa.

Benefits include long service life thanks to its high resistance to oxidation and nitration; protection against valve seat recession; excellent acid neutralising capacities; and protection against rust and corrosion.

These benefits are proven in extensive field trial tests, with GE officially approving the lubricant for use on its GE Jenbacher 2, 3, 4 (type B) and 6 (type C & E) series gas engines, operating on numerous fuel classes or catalysts. It has also recently been approved for GE Jenbacher type 6 series high pressure engines with steel pistons (from version – F) in fuel Class A; and has been approved by Caterpillar Energy Solutions for its CG132, CG170 and CG260 engines operating on all gas types; and Deutz AG for its 913, 914 and 2015 series engines.

Q8 Mahler G5 also exceeds the requirements of numerous equipment manufacturers and is recommended for use in GE Waukesha, Guascor Power, MAN Truck & Bus, MTU Onsite Energy, Wärtsilä, Perkins, Liebherr, 2G and Cummins engines.

Also introduced is Q8 Mahler GR5, a high-performance stationary gas engine oil developed for operation under mild to severe conditions and blended using a premium, hydrocracked (synthetic) base oil.

Approved by Rolls-Royce Bergen for use on its B Series engines, Q8 Mahler GR5 satisfies the demands for lower emissions and higher efficiencies in today’s gas engines, where this more oxidation-stable engine oil is capable of controlling liner cleanliness and oil consumption for increased liner and piston ring temperatures. In addition, it exceeds the requirements of a number of OEMs and is recommended for use by GE Waukesha, GE Jenbacher, Caterpillar Energy Solutions, Deutz, Guascor Power, MAN Truck & Bus, MTU Onsite Energy, Perkins, Liebherr, 2G and Cummins.

Benefits include low deposit tendency; acid neutralising capacities; and an extended service life thanks to its high oxidation resistance and synthetic-based formulation. Q8 Mahler GR5 also offers enhanced lubricity and solubility properties to provide improved engine wear protection, resistance to sludge formation and upgraded detergency properties to provide cleaner engine components. It also delivers excellent resistance against pre-ignition and nitration; as well protection against rust, corrosion and valve seat recession.

High quality customer support for the Q8 Mahler range includes technical backup and delivery ex-works from Q8Oils in Leeds to customer sites throughout the UK. A used oil analysis service (Q8 QUOTA) also enables customers to regularly analyse oil condition to help prevent engine damage.

Finally, Q8Oils is so confident in the performance of its range of gas engine oils that it is challenging owners and operators to provide access to an engine operating under the most severe conditions; and it will prove the benefits of lubricating the engine with its Q8 range.

Further information on Q8 Mahler G5 and Q8 Mahler GR5 can be found at www.Q8Oils.co.uk, by emailing marketing@Q8Oils.co.uk or calling +44 (0)113 235 0555.

Opened in March 1971 by the Good Samaritan Foundation, the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) located near Mount Kilimanjaro is a referral hospital for over 11 million people in Northern Tanzania. The KCMC’s ophthalmology department, run by Dr William Makupa, has been operational since the centre was opened and is available to provide high-quality eye care to over 8 million people in Tanzanian.

As Dr William Makupa explains: “The use of JUN-AIR air compressors plays a vital role in helping to prevent blindness, by supporting the cataract surgery and routine phacoemulsification eye care services offered at KCMC. JUN-AIR compressors are the only ones the centre has purchased in the past fifteen years and the brand is continually favored thanks to its long, reliable service life, anti-corrosion qualities, ease of operation and low noise output.”

Three JUN-AIR compressors were recently purchased to replace existing ageing compressors – two JUN-AIR 6-25 models and a JUN-AIR 12-40 oil-lubricated compressor – used in KCMC’s vitrectomy and phacoemulsification machines. Compressed air from the JUN-AIR compressors is used during numerous optical procedures, from maintaining the shape of the eye during retina surgery to driving pneumatic vitrectomy devices by creating air pressure to either push fluids into to the eye or suck fluids out.

Commenting for Gast Group, European sales director Andre Goodson says: “This is another great example of a partnership between manufacturer, distributor and end user; and our thanks also go to South Africa-based Finch Air for their support. The relationship with KCMC is a great example of the diverse range of applications suited to our compressors and we are pleased that JUN-AIR is part of the successful ophthalmic process at the centre.”

Plymouth-based Manuplas – an Advanced Insulation company specialising in the design, engineering and manufacture of floatation and buoyancy solutions for the marine and offshore sectors – has invested in an in-house recycling project that has seen the company reduce its impact on the environment by recycling an impressive 38-tonnes of lightweight Polyethylene Foam and Expanded Polystyrene Foam.

With densities ranging from 0.02 – 0.18 g/cc as delivered, the foam-based material used by Manuplas for its surface-based marine solutions is between 5 and 50 times lighter than water. The material is purchased by the company in sheets or rolls, with multiple layers being thermo-laminated and rolled to create a lightweight but solid looking cylinder. These cylinders are produced in numerous sizes and used as fender systems for small boats or yachts, or the large floating structures seen in docks and shipyards.

This thermo-laminating process creates an, uneven edge to the cylinders so Manuplas over sizes the diameter and length of each section, which is then profiled to the correct specification and formed to create domed or chamfered edges. This creates a substantial amount of high value foam offcuts that were of little use to the company because they couldn’t be melted down and reprocessed or recycled.

As Manuplas research and development manager David Hamnett explains: “The grade of foam used is not recyclable by traditional methods so, with financial support from Business Link, we started investigated alternative recycling options. We also began looking for organisations that could put the recycled material to good use and discovered opportunities at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park.

Following its research, Manuplas purchased a compactor to reduce the volume of discarded foam going to landfill and has, since recycling operations began in 2011, completely eliminated this particular waste stream, which equated to approximately 75% of the company’s total waste volume. It also reduced the associated high transportation and disposal fees that were costing the company nearly £10,000 a year.

Used in the manufacture of products for the marine, offshore oil & gas, renewables and leisure industries, Manuplas successfully recycled approximately 2,000 cubic metres of lightweight foam between January 2012 and March 2014. The recycling process shreds the large foam offcuts into smaller manageable pieces that are then fed into a closed chamber where, using high-pressure compactors, air content from the foam cells is removed. This results in foam that, instead of its original 0.03g per cubic centimetre density, has a density (0.8g per cubic centimetre) similar to that of timber. Once the compaction process is complete, the processed 300 millimetre square extrusions are cut into one-metre lengths and palletised.

At this point Manuplas could have just sent the compacted product to landfill. However, being environmentally conscious and keen to avoid this, they decided to find a solution that meant the material was, at the very least, recyclable or useful to someone else. So they contacted local organisations to ask if the compacted foam extrusions or logs (which do not rot and require no on-going treatment) would be useful.

“Happily, having received positive responses from Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Manuplas subsequently donated a significant number of the compacted logs for landscaping and animal enclosure projects!” reports David.

As Paignton Zoo Environmental Park’s environmental officer Peter Morgan explains, the organisation regularly purchases wooden sleepers for landscaping and light construction projects but, with the old stock of railway sleepers rapidly depleting and hard to come by, they were purchasing stock manufactured from newly felled timber.

“While all timber used at the Zoo comes from FSC-certified suppliers, the fact that trees are still being felled to produce the sleepers didn’t fit with the organisation’s ecological or ethical objectives. However, being members of NISP we were made aware of what Manuplas was doing at a sustainability workshop and, having been invited to witness their recycling project and view the resulting product, its Eco Posts proved ideal replacements for our landscaping projects.”

NISP is the world's first National Industrial Symbiosis Programme and provides a platform to encourage businesses to implement resource optimisation and efficiency programmes that remanufacture or retain materials and other resources in productive use for longer through ‘industrial symbiosis’.

As Paignton Zoo counts down to its 100th birthday, they have a programme of events planned and decided to redevelop an old zoo building and landscape the areas surrounding the soft play and education centres in what has become its Urban Zone. The zoo’s curator of plants and gardens studied the use of recycled materials for landscaping and, using the foam Eco Posts, subsequently created curved, undulating borders and retaining walls at the entrance to the Urban Zone and what became Investigate, a new exhibit housing a display of bugs, scorpions and spiders, which coincided with Paignton Zoo’s Year of the Invertebrate.

Summarising for Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Peter Morgan says that the effect the Eco Posts has created at its Investigate exhibit is unique, couldn’t be matched using timber sleepers and, thanks to Manuplas’ kind donation, has saved the charity significant amounts of money that can be put to good use elsewhere.

The donations have saved both organisations a considerable sum of money and, instead of the mundane appearance of the previously used traditional timber structures, the Manuplas logs have created a visually striking look that is more in keeping with the Zoos’ natural environments. What’s more, the 38 tonnes of foam waste recycled since Manuplas started the process is equivalent to the weight of more than ten of Paignton Zoo’s female African elephant, Duchess!

Commenting for Q8Oils, direct sales manager Jeremy Dineen says: “We have launched The Challenge because we are so confident that customers will find a Q8Oils metal working fluid that is ideal for their processes and applications, and saves them money.”

Q8Oils is proud that it offers one of the most comprehensive portfolios of neat and soluble cutting fluids in the UK and is convinced that, by offering a payment-by-results trial, The Challenge will prove the benefits of Q8Oils metal working fluids to UK manufacturers.

After first establishing clear, mutually-agreed objectives, Q8Oils will set up the trial and then monitor on-going performance of the lubricant to ensure that it, and the machine, are operating at peak performance. A comprehensive report on the results is presented at regular intervals during the trial and, at the end of The Challenge.

As well as performance requirements, Q8Oils also recognises its customers’ commercial needs, explains Jeremy. “By offering optimum, high, and extreme performance products, we can help customers balance criteria, such as surface finish, the severity of the working environment and productivity, against cost.”

If you are interested in taking part in ‘The Challenge’, please contact Q8Oils who will start the process by determining which metal working fluid from the portfolio of six product families, Q8 Brunel, Q8 Berlioz, Q8 Baroni, Q8 Beethoven, Q8 Bach and Q8 Brahms, is right for the application.

The Car People, a fast growing used car dealership in the North of England, was established in 2000 and now boasts three showrooms in Sheffield, Wakefield and Manchester. The company aims to make car buying an enjoyable and memorable experience, and with over 50% of sales coming from repeat customers and recommendations the system is obviously working. In addition, each of its showrooms also has its own workshop equipped with nine service ramps and a total of 40 service technicians across the three businesses.

Since opening in 2000 The Car People’s three workshops have also maintained a loyal relationship with Q8Oils for their supply of engine oils and associated passenger car lubricants.

As The Car People’s spokesman Jonathan Allbones explains, the bulk of the supply they receive are Q8 Formula Special G Long Life and Q8 Formula Techno FE. Other products are supplied for older vehicles and for the new Ford Eco Boost engines. When special vehicles come into stock, other products are ordered as required. “Most vehicle manufactures have specific oil requirements, so we take other engine oils from Q8Oils as we need them.” Says Jonathan.

The Car People have been with Q8Oils since the company was formed in 2000 and efficiency has always been the main objective of the Q8Oils service, because the business is high volume. The Car People’s service department needs to be sure that the stock they order is always replenished in good time and, as Jonathan explains, they have never had an issue with that.

Commenting on its original decision, Jonathan says: “Initially The Car People’s workshop business was drawn to Q8Oils because the company had the best combination of high quality products, very good service levels and competitive prices, and they can deliver the specialist oils for all types of different engines. Of course we looked at other lubricant suppliers but Q8Oils ticked all the boxes, and in the end the decision was easy.

“Our relationship with Q8Oils provides the lubricants we need to service the high volume of vehicles we handle. They have also been a very reliable supplier and these are the reasons we have stayed loyal for almost fifteen years.”
Gloucester-based Advanced Insulation – a leading manufacturer of technical and insulation materials for the upstream oil and gas industry – has won the regional Smart Product Award at this year’s EEF/Aldermore Future Manufacturing Awards for its ContraFlame® MS400 lightweight cellar deck protection system for offshore oil platforms.

Won against stiff competition from businesses across the South West and South Wales, this regional win means Advanced Insulation is now automatically entered for the national award, which will be announced at a gala reception being held in London in April.

Being close to the ocean’s surface, offshore platform cellar decks are exposed to the elements and therefore often insulated. They also require protection from fire as they accommodate numerous high-pressure pipe systems containing hydrocarbons and traditional solutions use fibrous insulation with a thin stainless steel protective sheet welded underneath. But this design presents a number of issues and is one that Advanced Insulation was able to significantly improve upon.

One issue with the traditional design was that too many supports were required to secure the protective steel sheets to protect them against wind loadings. This not only results in extra weight being added to the platform, but  is also estimated to cost in excess of £100,000 to support each tonne of weight on an oil platform. Additionally, due to the number of fixings required by the support system, installation can take a long time and, when complete, cannot be easily sealed and is therefore prone to premature corrosion from seawater.

Commenting for Advanced Insulation, managing director Andrew Bennion says: “Offshore oil platforms are becoming increasingly complex in response to the needs of oil fields that are more difficult to exploit and located in increasingly hostile environments. As a result there is a drive for lighter, more robust materials that are quicker to install.”

He adds that, based on its manufacturing expertise and material technology, Advanced Insulation developed ContraFlame MS400 to meet this niche market requirement.

ContraFlame MS400 is a robust deck insulation system that uses Advanced Insulation’s patented phenolic-based material technology. It is simple to install, offers significant weight savings (up to 100x) compared to traditional systems and can achieve savings up to £10m per platform. Additionally, the new insulation system benefits from the company’s compression moulding capability and achieves a 60-minute hydrocarbon fire rating for each 107mm thick panel.

Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame MS400 has already achieved significant successes, has been approved by BP, Dong Energy and Exxon and has already generated multi-million pound savings for major international oil companies.

Summarising for Aldermore, Richard Whitehouse says: “Innovative companies that bring new products to market make an important contribution to the UK economy and drive growth and success. It’s important that their achievements are recognised. We congratulate Advanced Insulation on its well-deserved success at the regional awards and wish them the best of luck for the national finals.”
