Since the acquisition of Plymouth-based Manuplas by Advanced Insulation in April 2014, the company has seen significant growth in demand for its products and as a result has made the decision to purchase a neighbouring facility on the Estover Road site.
The new facility will service the demand for new subsea buoyancy products as well as creating more space for marine products manufacture including buoys and modular bow fender systems for offshore wind farm service vessels.
Commenting for Manuplas, General Manager Stephen Ward says: “The growth of the renewables industry, particularly offshore wind farms, has driven us to spend many years researching and developing leading concepts for modular fendering systems that are mounted on wind farm support and crew vessels. With these new solutions already proving popular, and demand for our existing portfolio strong, extra space and additional manufacturing facilities will help to futureproof the company.”
The Manuplas portfolio now includes a range of sub-surface buoyancy and subsea protection products such as pipe laying floats, umbilical floats, installation buoys, modular subsea mooring buoys, piggyback saddles, subsea cable protection systems and ROV buoyancy. Additionally, the company is also readying itself for the launch of a range of Distributed Buoyancy Modules incorporating proprietary engineered clamp technology for the SURF (Subsea Umbilical Riser Flowline) market. At 50,000 square feet, the purchase of the new unit on Estover Road will more than double the manufacturing and office space of the existing Manuplas facility, with 80% of the additional floor space being earmarked for the manufacture of future designed and developed high-performance products.
As Stephen goes on to say, the Manuplas name has a long association with the design, manufacture and supply of marine products to ports, harbours, navies, boat builders and vessel operators around the world and, through substantial investment in research and development, products now include market-leading solutions for the rapidly growing offshore industry where lightweight buoyancy materials are required for use in water depths beyond 3000msw.
On-going research and development projects have seen the company develop and manufacture high-performance products incorporating physically cross-linked polyethylene foams which, to increase abrasion and tear resistance, are sprayed in a unique protective marine-grade polyurethane coating that allows for the incorporation of a nylon or Kevlar reinforcement. Additionally, the company’s new modular, foamless polyurethane fender solutions have the ability to deliver excellent energy absorption properties thanks to the unique design of the internal structure.

Gloucester-based Advanced Insulation has, for a second time in six months, been placed on a Sunday Times Track listing, this time ranked 58th on the sixth annual Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200.
Commenting for Advanced Insulation – a leading manufacturer of passive fire protection systems and insulation materials for the upstream oil and gas industry – Group Marketing Manager Matt Collins says: “This is our second appearance on a Sunday Times Track league table in 2015 and we are delighted to be joined on this listing by 12 other companies from the South West region as well as other oil and gas sector businesses including Mech-Tool Engineering and ICR Integrity.”
Measured over its latest two years of available accounts, Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 listing ranks Britain's mid-market private companies with the fastest-growing international sales and is an expansion of the International Track 100 league table. Advanced Insulation made this latest list with overseas sales more than doubling to £35m in the two years to 2014, boosted by growth in Korea, Angola and Brazil.
Commenting for HSBC, UK head of corporate banking Amanda Murphy says: “The Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 is a great reflection of the value of building connections overseas. The world is getting smaller, and international business relationships are easier to build, providing ambitious businesses with many more opportunities to grow. Having seen significant increases in sales activity from the North America market in recent months, UK-based Advanced Insulation – a leading manufacturer of technical and insulation materials for the upstream oil and gas industry; and specialist in the design, engineering and manufacture of polymer solutions for the marine and offshore sectors – is expanding its Houston, Texas-based operation with an additional 10,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility.
Announcing the move, Advanced Insulation’s managing director Andrew Bennion says: “The 10,000 sq. ft. expansion means we are now even better placed to assist our North American customers more effectively by providing an in-house insulation facility.”
Until now, most insulation services were undertaken at its customers’ facilities, but the expansion means Advanced Insulation can now insulate subsea components and systems using its ContraTherm® range at its own warehousing and manufacturing facility.
As Andrew goes on to say, the recent appointment of Mike Sherman and Larry King to develop and implement Advanced Insulation’s strategic growth plans for this key market is already paying dividends. “We are forecasting subsea sales to increase significantly in the coming months and are anticipating substantial additional appointments to ensure we continue to meet and exceed the demands and expectations of our North American customers.”

Q8Oils has announced a reorganisation of its European lubricants manufacturing following the recent completion of a £100 million investment to upgrade its European blending plant in Antwerp. Having doubled capacity at its Antwerp plant, which is now capable of producing 250 million litres of blended product a year, Q8Oils has moved its UK blending operations to Antwerp and is investing in a new purpose-built UK headquarters in Leeds.
Explaining the changes, UK managing director Andy Dixon stresses that this is a positive step for the UK and that Q8Oils is now focusing on expanding its business in the UK market. “This move is part of our plans for a long term commitment to the manufacturing, automotive and energy sectors and the restructuring includes new headquarters in Leeds that opened on 3rd July.”
Andy also confirms that Q8Oils has announced the appointment of new business partners, IBL Bulk Liquids, Reynolds Logistics, Potters Logistics and Clarke Transport, to manage the company’s bulk storage and pack operations in the UK.
All new UK distribution partners are established experts in packaging and distribution; and the Q8 products delivered will be the same as those already sold in the UK, with products being processed in Antwerp and delivered to Q8Oils’ UK partners.
From its operations on the River Hull and in the Port of Hull, IBL Bulk Liquids will provide Q8Oils with services and facilities for the handling and storage of bulk liquids. They are perfectly located to handle product imports from Q8Oils in Europe and its sites offer excellent connections to the UK road and rail networks. IBL Bulk Liquids offer 120 storage tanks, with a total capacity of around 34,500 cubic metres and handling facilities for road tankers and tank containers.
Operating throughout the UK, Reynolds Logistics provides metered deliveries of lubricants and, using the markets’ largest operational fleet of metered tankers and IBC vehicles based in more than six strategic locations, they are well placed to provide Q8Oils with a fast and efficient delivery service.
Potters Logistics maintains a centrally-managed fleet of articulated and rigid vehicles and will provide Q8Oils with a flexible, cost-effective road freight and transport logistics distribution service from its six distribution centres and rail freight terminals.
Finally, family owned and operated Clarke Transport uses state-of-the-art technology, machinery and vehicles to ensure that the Q8Oils service remains ahead of the field. Based on old-fashioned values of safety, excellent customer service, integrity and reliability, Clarke Transport specialises in transporting sensitive goods for some of the world’s leading manufacturers of chemicals.
Andy Dixon states: “The important message to Q8Oils’ loyal UK customers is longevity and optimisation and, through better utilisation of European assets, the UK business is already creating long-term commitments, including new area sales manager appointments and recently signed major contracts, all of which demonstrate an on-going commitment to the UK.”
Some of the rationalising of the UK business has been influenced through experience gained during a similarly successful merger recently completed by Q8Oils in Scandinavia. Two years ago the expanded Antwerp plant began supplying product to the region and the service proved so successful that Q8Oils was able to merge operations in Denmark and Sweden and supply the entire Scandinavian customer base from there. The move means that Q8Oils is now the largest oil company in Scandinavia and the experienced gained has provided a successful model that has been a useful guide to the UK team.
